The Ultimate Guide to Proposing in Yosemite
Where to Propose in Yosemite + Tips from a Yosemite Wedding Photographer: Making your Yosemite proposal memorable
A Yosemite proposal can be a magical experience, so I’ve gathered some insider tips to help make your special moment as unforgettable as the scenery.
Planning a Yosemite proposal? You’re in the right place. Yosemite is one of the most breathtaking places in the world to pop the question — with granite cliffs, waterfalls, quiet meadows, and wild, starry skies. Whether you’re dreaming of a quiet moment for two or a surprise proposal with a hidden photographer (👋 hi, that’s me!), this guide will help you plan the perfect way to ask the biggest question of your life.
Why Propose in Yosemite?
Because it’s not just a location it’s a feeling. The stillness of the valley at sunrise, the hum of the wind at Tunnel View, the way the sun turns El Capitan gold before it dips behind the pines… If you want your proposal to feel wild, real, and unforgettable, Yosemite is it.
And as a Yosemite wedding photographer who’s seen this park in every season, I can tell you: proposals here are pure magic.
Best Places to Propose in Yosemite
There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to the perfect proposal spot. So here’s a breakdown by vibe and activity level to help you find your place.

🌲 Low-Key & Accessible Proposal Spots
Perfect if you’re short on time, prefer a mellow walk, or want to avoid hiking gear
Glacier Point (seasonal)
Incredible views of Half Dome with minimal walking. Ideal for sunrise or sunset. Popular but worth it and if you walk just a little further down the trail, you’ll find quiet pockets away from the crowd.
Tunnel View
Iconic. You can drive right up, and the view of Yosemite Valley, El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome will take your breath away. Propose here at sunrise for soft light and fewer people.
Yosemite Valley Meadow
Peaceful, quiet, and surrounded by granite walls and towering trees. Great for a picnic-style proposal or slow morning walk before dropping to one knee.
🪶 Moderate Adventure Proposal Spots
Great for couples who don’t mind a little hiking for something special
Taft Point
A Yosemite favorite for a reason. Epic cliffs, wild views, and that open, raw feeling that makes you feel like the only two people in the world. About 2.2 miles round trip, with a relatively easy hike. Sunset is unbeatable here.
Mirror Lake (seasonal)
A quiet, reflective spot tucked at the base of Half Dome. It’s a beautiful option in spring/early summer when the water is high. The trail is flat and accessible but feels more remote the further in you go.
Bridalveil Fall
Short hike, big payoff. The trail recently underwent renovations, and it’s a quick walk to a stunning view. Misty and magical, especially after spring melt.

⛰️ Full Adventure Proposal Spots
For the bold couples who want a proposal to match their wild hearts
Sentinel Dome
Panoramic views with fewer crowds than Glacier Point. The 2.2-mile roundtrip hike gives you views that stretch for miles — and it’s especially jaw-dropping at sunrise.
North Dome or Clouds Rest
Long hikes (8–14 miles) but the kind of views that make you want to cry (in the best way). These are for seasoned hikers and couples who love the journey as much as the destination. Bring snacks, headlamps, and maybe a champagne toast at the summit.
Mist Trail to Vernal Falls
This hike ends up being about 9 miles round trip and puts you right next to vernal falls. Be prepared to get wet! You can also hike right to the waterfall and then hike back if you dont want to do the whole 9 miles.

Tips for Planning Your Yosemite Proposal
1. Timing matters
Sunrise is quiet, golden, and magical. Sunset is dramatic and romantic. Midday can be bright and busy, especially in summer — so plan accordingly.
2. Think about the season
Spring brings waterfalls, summer has the best access, fall is warm and golden, and winter is peaceful with fewer crowds (but limited access to some points like Glacier and Taft).
3. Hire a Yosemite wedding photographer (hi, again 👋)
Whether you want the moment captured candidly or want to celebrate with an engagement session right after, I’ll help you plan, scout, and capture your proposal so you can relive it forever.
4. Consider permits and rules
Most proposal spots don’t require a permit for photography unless you’re setting up props or blocking trails — but always double-check. And Leave No Trace is everything here. We respect the land and its wildness.
