There’s something about Glacier Point at sunrise that feels otherworldly. As the sun creeps up over Half Dome, the granite glows, the valley fills with golden light. The whole world feels like it’s holding its breath. It’s the kind of place that makes time stand still. It was the exact spot Jeff chose to ask Emma the biggest question of their lives.
Planning a Surprise Proposal in Yosemite
Jeff reached out to me a couple of months before Labor Day weekend, excited but also a little nervous. He knew he wanted an epic Yosemite proposal location. After tossing around ideas, we landed on Glacier Point at sunrise. It’s one of the most iconic spots in the park. While it’s popular, the view of Half Dome and Yosemite Valley is unmatched.
Even though it was 6 a.m., Glacier Point was more crowded than expected holiday weekends in Yosemite will do that! But Jeff was calm, collected, and ready to roll with it. We had our plan dialed in, and all that was left was to make the magic happen.

The Proposal Moment
The original idea was for Jeff to propose on this amazing rock overlooking Half Dome. When we got there, a couple was already sitting on it, soaking in the sunrise. Without skipping a beat, Jeff walked up, asked if they’d take a photo of him and Emma, and slipped them a note: “I’m going to propose.”
That was my cue to step out of hiding. As the sun lit up Half Dome behind them, Jeff dropped to one knee and Emma’s face lit up with the sweetest surprise. The entire crowd around them cheered. It was one of those raw, real moments that felt like the whole park was celebrating with them.

Why Glacier Point is Perfect for Proposals
Glacier Point is a dream location for couples who want sweeping views, an adventurous feel, and that golden light at sunrise or sunset. It’s one of the best places to see Yosemite’s grandeur in a single frame. You can see Half Dome, Yosemite Valley, and even Yosemite Falls in the distance. While it can get busy (especially during holidays), with a little planning, it’s still possible to create an intimate and meaningful experience here.

Planning Your Own Yosemite Proposal
If you’re thinking about proposing in Yosemite, here’s what I recommend:
- Timing matters: Sunrise and sunset are the most magical (and flattering for photos).
- Expect crowds: Even early mornings can be busy during peak season, so flexibility is key.
- Have a backup plan: There are plenty of stunning overlooks and quiet spots nearby if your first choice is taken.
- Work with a local Yosemite photographer: I’ll help you scout, plan, and capture the moment. So all you have to do is focus on your partner.
Jeff & Emma’s proposal was the perfect reminder. No matter how many people are around, what makes a proposal special is the love between two people. It is those real, unfiltered reactions you’ll never forget.
If you’re dreaming of your own Glacier Point proposal in Yosemite, I’d love to help you plan and be your Yosemite Photographer.
