Edgar & Estefani’s Surprise Proposal at Tunnel View in Yosemite National Park

Yosemite Park Photographer takes photos of a couple getting engaged at Tunnel View

There’s something about Yosemite that always keeps you on your toes. You can plan every detail perfectly and watch the forecast all week. Still, you might wake up to Mother Nature deciding she has her own plans. But honestly? That’s part of the magic of this place. Edgar and Estefani’s surprise proposal at Tunnel View was the perfect reminder of that.

When Edgar first reached out to me months before the proposal, he already knew exactly what he wanted. He wanted an unforgettable moment for Estefani. They would be surrounded by the epic beauty of Yosemite National Park. Together, we carefully planned out the day and picked the perfect location. We also mapped out all the little details that would make the proposal feel personal and intentional.

Then Yosemite weather decided to throw us a curveball.

Clouds rolled in, the conditions shifted, and suddenly our carefully planned vision had to evolve. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned as a Yosemite Park Photographer, it’s that Yosemite always rewards flexibility. Sometimes the unexpected creates the moments you could never plan for.

As Edgar and Estefani pulled up to Tunnel View, I was tucked away trying my best to stay hidden beneath a tree. Meanwhile, the two of them made their way toward one of the most iconic views in all of Yosemite. With El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome framed in the distance, Edgar led Estefani toward the overlook.

And then it happened.

Right there at Tunnel View, Edgar got down on one knee.

Estefani had absolutely no idea.

It was one of those moments that felt completely frozen in time. And somehow, thanks to the weather keeping most visitors away, we had the entire viewpoint almost completely to ourselves. Anyone who has visited Yosemite knows just how rare that is.

After giving the two of them a few moments to soak it all in and celebrate together, we spent some time taking portraits around Tunnel View. Meanwhile, the dramatic clouds rolled through the valley. The moody weather paired with the soft light made Yosemite feel even more cinematic than usual.

Once we wrapped up at Tunnel View, we made our way down into Yosemite Valley toward Cook’s Meadow. By then, the day had settled into something calm and beautiful. The meadow was peaceful and the waterfalls were flowing in the distance. Edgar and Estefani finally had a chance to simply enjoy being newly engaged together.

These are always my favorite kinds of sessions. In these, things don’t go exactly according to plan, but somehow end up even better because of it.
